What’s a Cou-Yon’s? Well, if you’re in Port Allen Louisiana it’s some of the best BBQ you will ever have. After a long day on the road Char and I got settled into our room and started looking for dinner. As we searched the internet one name kept popping up, Cue-Yon’s, so after a quick talk with the lady at the front desk who supported our decision we were off to Cou-Yon’s and some of the best BBQ we’ve had in a long time.
When we arrived at Cou-Yon’s we knew we were on the right track, the small parking lot was packed with cars and cars were parked up and down the street. I was thinking that was a good sign when we finally parked and climbed out of the car. The second good sign was the undeniable scent of smoking BBQ that reached out and caressed us a good 40 feet from the front door. The Cou-Yon’s building is a plain shotgun style shack but as we approached we knew good things were happening inside because of the smiles on the people coming out the front door with big white sacks of take-out.
Once inside be prepared as the deep rich scent of perfect BBQ is going to send your senses dancing their happy dance. The small area that makes up the seating for Cou-Yon’s is bustling with activity and the undeniable sound that always accompanies good food. Not conversation but the click of knife and fork on plates, you know the sound, people aren’t talking much because they are busy eating..
At Cou-Yon’s you get in line and wait a few ravenous moments before you get to the counter. While we waited mounds of ribs, brisket and pulled pork were paraded in front of us as the waiters took their treasures out to waiting customers that had all ready ordered. Behind the counter three busy young workers were taking orders and filling a steady stream of take-out orders.
While we waited we were greeted by one of the owners, Paul. Paul asked if we had been in before and when we said, “no”. He grabbed two menus and began telling us about what we could expect. “We specialize in stuffed bake potato’s,” he explained. Stuffed potatoes with things like smoked brisket, fried shrimp and crawfish étouffée. Paul also went on to describe a variety of seafood they offered but my mind was firmly anchored in BBQ. “What do you recommend for BBQ?” I asked.
“Everything,” he said and showed us that we could get the three meat BBQ entree for $14.99. We were sold and when we got up to the friendly counter person we ended up splitting the 3 meat entree which included spare ribs, moist brisket and their smoked sausage. Along with the entree we shared we got a side of coleslaw and a side of red potato salad, along with a succulent piece of buttered Texas Toast (even though we were in LA!)
After ordering we were given our two Shinner beer’s and sat down. In about 5 minutes Paul brought our meal and an extra plate. Cou-Yon’s is not shy about it’s servings and our $14.99 3 Meat entree and two sides was more then enough food for both of us.
All three of the BBQ meats we tried were, fall off the bone, amazing. It takes time to make a flavor filled brisket or rib and it was clear that at Cou-Yon’s they are willing to put in the time. The potato salad and slaw were also excellent. As we ate in the silence that often accompanies amazing food, Paul came by to check on us and Char couldn’t resist getting a photo with the owner of this amazing little gem of a restaurant.
