Back on Task

June and July were a travel and work whirl wind for us, so we took August and most of September off. Oh, the joys of those lazy days of summer retirement.

It’s been over a month since our last article but it was time for a “vacation”. In June and July we spent 13 days cooking at the Youth world championship sailing regatta in Corpus Christy which to be honest was a lot of work. During that period of time we also took the time to wonder up to the Arctic to explore the are around Yellow Knife Canada. We also took two road trips across America. Charlene also managed to fly up to South Dakota for a week with family. All that work and travel made coming home and just relaxing for a month a necessity. But, like all good things, our rest period is over and it’s time to start blogging and traveling again.

Looking back, our blog was launched on December 1, 2016 and in the last 18 months we’ve shared 140 articles and had the joy of building our geezer community and watching our articles turn into some great adventurer for our readers.

In the last year and a half our goal has not changed, we want to educate and inspire our readers to realize their travel dreams. With that in mind were going to start this month with a series of articles about how we go about developing a major trip. In late December Charlene and I will be leaving for a 2 month visit to South East Asia. A trip like South East Asia takes a fair amount of planning but if your goal is to do it without increasing your monthly budget one red cent then you better be ready for some serious geezer planing.

The basic outline of our trip is to visit Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore and finally spend 3 weeks in Bali. Our trip will start in late December and we should be back home by mid to late February. So, for next few months we’ll be offering articles about the development of our trip and of course as the actual trip unfolds we’ll look at the travel and consider how our planning has turned into reality.

As I’m sitting here I am brainstorming some of the articles that this trip will generate that will help our readers in  their traveling.

First, and fore most will be putting together the flights. The anchor of our trip will be the flight from Miami to Hong Kong round trip, when we take a major trip like the Hong Kong leg of our trip  we spend the travel assets to fly business or first class. That means we will be looking at long haul premier class ticket strategies. The next issue with flights will be the 5 or 6 small flights we take once we are in Asia. These flights have their own unique issues because to save money and travel assets we will be flying airlines that don’t have affiliations with the major airlines so airline miles won’t work.

The second set of issues will be lodging.  We will need rooms for about 55 days in some fairly unique areas so the way we research our lodging options should be interesting. Our lodging issues will run the gambit from extremely expensive lodging in destinations like Hong Kong to extremely reasonable lodging in locations like Cambodia. In choosing our lodging we will be most of the tools we have in our Geezer tool box including miles, points and paying with cash.

Finally, we will have the multiple issues that you should research before any major trip, We know, we hate pounding thru the research too, but for a trip to work without any hitches you gotta do the ground work. Let’s see: we will need visa info; inoculation info; where are the good restaurants; how to get from point A to point B on land; researching political problems in our destination countries, currency exchange issues, and of course what credit cards are accepted in what areas. These are just a start but we’ll try to do a few articles that describe some of the best web sites and resources to answer these questions and make the research a little less depressing.

It’s going to be an interesting six months and we think our articles that track our development of this trip will give our readers a real life blueprint into how to travel like a Geezer..

Keep checking out the blog. While some of our articles will be tracking the development of our South East Asia trip we’ll still be looking at the best ways to build travel rewards, the best air, lodging and cruise deals and or course discussing the good old fashion common sense of traveling within your budget so you get the most bang for your travel buck.

Well, were back, were rested and were ready to start exploring the the world of possibilities that make us Geezers With Passports.
